Everybody thought that they knew the chronological nature of the Doctor’s regenerations.
Then The Name of the Doctor attacked.

“Just for all you people that didn’t understand the season 7 finale of Doctor Who tonight, IMMA EXPLAIN.
The Doctor didn’t like the other version of himself (John Hurt) because he was the Timelord that ended the Timewar (a war between the Timelords and the Daleks; it was released in 1996).
- He is a younger version of the 1st Doctor, before he became the Doctor.
- He is a regeneration that came in between the 8th and 9th Doctors who didn`t take up the name, the Doctor. He was the one involved in the Time War.
I guess it’s safe to say that the 50th will be full of Hurt.
So this isn’t my picture and I completely forgot the post I got it off of. But this makes complete sense: the REAL 9th Doctor (at the end of the time war?) we believe is John Hurt. The next is Christopher E. who is actually the 10th born out of the blood and hate of the time war that the real 9th went through. I think this theory makes the most sense of all.
Remember in “The God Complex ” when the Doctor looked in the room that held his greatest fear?
He looked in the room and said

I think John Hurt is actually the ninth incarnation of the Doctor. The one that committed all of the acts during the Time War.
He says that he did what needed to be done, he did what was right. Eleven says “not in the name of…
